Hey You!
Good health, and feeling GREAT in general, doesn't just include habits that revolve around diet and exercise! I frequently ask my clients where they think they are missing the boat with "Balance", and they typically respond with things like "I haven't exercised in years" or "I have a sugar addiction!". But rarely do they ever say things like "I've been slacking on my mobility" or "I never get outside in the sunshine!".
So, let's switch our gears here for a minute and spend some time focusing on all of the "other things" health and wellness related that DON'T involve food or exercise.
Here are 7x habits that I attempt to do on a daily basis myself to prioritize my self care and wellness!
âJournalingâ
Or what I like to call "mind dumping". Some people do better with doing this right before bed to help clear their minds, and others do better with it in the morning to help organize their thoughts for the day! You don't have to write a "dear diary" kinda novel, just take whatever's running in your brain and DUMP it on the paper! It could be complaints, things you don't want to talk about with others, negative feelings, a to-do listâŠANYTHING!
âAffirmationsâ
There's something to be said for manifesting the life you want, but first and foremost, manifesting the kind of day that you want to have! Instead of waking up and stressing about how horrible your day is going to be, set a positive pace with some affirmations! I like to write them on post-its and read them while I'm brushing my teeth in the morning!
Here's a few examples:
• "I am lucky to have a fresh start."
• "Today could be the greatest day of my life"
• "I deserve to have a great day!"
âReverse gravity meditationâ
Typically after my lunch, I like to give myself 10 minutes to decompress. I scoot my toosh as close to the wall as I can and put my legs up the wall. I place my hands on my belly and do a guided meditation (I like the Insight Timer app) or just focus on my breathing. It allows the blood to flow up the body to your heart, lungs, your brain, etc! We spend so much time stressed and upright that it feels good to meditate and elevate!
âTime blockingâ
Do you ever have those days where you make your to-do list, and you run yourself ragged all day long, but at the end of the day, your list is the same if not longer?! Yup! Been there! Nowadays, I like to spend a few minutes after my morning journaling and affirmations to block out what times during the day that I will complete certain tasks. It's like taking your list one step further! The more intentional you can be about how you spend your time during the day, the less likely you are to feel stressed and overwhelmed.
â10 minutes sunshineâ
Yes girl! Put the afternoon coffee down and step outside! You need that Vitamin D! Time block the 10 minutes into your schedule if you need to, but take a break and get out there for a minimum of 10 minutes each day. The sunshine and fresh air will help your mood and energy levels no question! And even better, if you can, WALK in the sunshine for that 10 minutes! Hello endorphins!!!
âHobbies/learningâ
Think about it...when's the last time you prioritized doing something that YOU enjoy? Adult coloring books, reading a fiction novel, making pottery?! Or the last time that you learned something new like how to play pickleball or do a fun DIY project at the house? We often have so little time that we neglect doing things for ourselves, but with some effective time blocking skills (see above) you can be more intentional about prioritizing time like this for yourself! Recently, I taught myself how to knit a chunky blanket from Youtube! Everyone got one for Christmas đ
âStretchingâ
I dare you to try to touch your toes right now! Did you do it? Was it ugly? Way worse than you thought? PROBABLY! With careers being mostly sedentary nowadays, our mobility as a society is struggling! And mobility is the key to an independent life as we grow older! The difficulty with improving flexibility or mobility though is that it takes time and consistency, so try to find ways to work it into your daily routine! For example, if you religiously watch Jeopardy with your husband every night, make a point to hold a stretch during each commercial break of the show! Double tasking at its finest!
The moral of the story is that there is SOOOOOO much more that goes into #balance than just diet and exercise. There are so many self care habits that we neglect due to lack of time and energy, but these habits are oftentimes exactly what you are missing from your routine in order to stay consistent with the diet and exercise plan!
